I have always loved decorating. Even when I was a little kid I would decorate the whole house just for fun (whether or not my mom thought it was fun, that’s a whole other thing). I even remember walking into other peoples houses and thinking how I would redecorate it if I lived there which, I must admit, I still do now.
So here’s a little background on me if you’re new here. I have a degree in fashion design and I used it for designing high end children’s clothing for about 8 years. I also did a 4 year stretch in interior decorating, primarily focusing on lake houses. Now, I am a homemaker having fun playing with my own space!
I have always been drawn to playing with colors and patterns, whether that be in my clothes or in a space. I am definitely a maximalist at heart but can still appreciate minimalist design. That is why I love to layer rugs. I love mixing the patterns in fun, new ways and creating an even cozier space while I’m at it (just imagine how nice it feels to walk on two rugs)! Here are a couple tips to creating your own perfect space by layering rugs.

These rugs are in my living room and I love how this mix has turned out! One of the things to consider when layering rugs is the size difference. The best ratio to have between the two sizes is about 2′. For example, if the top rug is 8’x10′ the bottom rug should be 10’x12′. This creates a 12″ border around the top rug.
If the bottom rug makes a border that is less than 12″ then the rugs will look too small together, creating an awkward mix. If the bottom rug is creating a border that is more than 12″ then the top rug will look too tiny, creating another awkward mix. You can play with the 2′ rule a little bit but try to keep it in the parameters as close as possible.

The other thing you need to consider is color. The colors do not have to match but they need to be the same tone. For example, the blue rugs in my living room have different colors in them but they are all in the same family. Similarly, the brown rugs in my sunroom all have the same neutral tones.
