Recent Reads 04/12/2025 (No Spoilers!)

I love reading! It’s something I have enjoyed doing since I was a little girl. Some of my favorite genres are classic literature, romance, mystery and non-fiction. Here are some books I have recently read and what I thought of them (scaled 1-5, 5 being the best).

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

This is the second time I have read this book so I obviously like it! This book is, in my opinion, hard to get into because the beginning is slow and long. But once you get into, it’s hard to put down! I would rate this 4/5.

Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon

I reread Outlander because I wanted to recap the story before reading the second book in the series, Dragonfly in Amber. This book has a great start but becomes a little tedious and slow to read towards the end. I would give this one a 4/5.

The Lucky One by Nicholas Sparks

I picked this one up when I walked past a little library in my neighborhood. Nicholas Sparks’ books are always a good read because you know they’re going to be nice, sort of like watching a Hallmark movie. The ending of this book did have a surprise twist which I thought was a bit harsh for one of the main characters, but it was fine. I would give this book a 3/5.

The Magician’s Nephew by C.S. Lewis

I was perusing my bookshelves when I saw this book sitting there and thought, “I haven’t read this in a long time, I think I will again.” This is the first book in the Chronicle of Narnia series and is geared towards younger readers. Nevertheless, I love the Biblical parallels it has and it is an easy read. I would rate this book 5/5.

Hiss and Hers: An Agatha Raisin Mystery by M.C. Beaton

I was walking around the library looking for something to read and found this book. It sounded interesting so I gave it a try! It was absolutely horrible. The main character is, in my opinion, mean and hard to like. The only reason I finished this book was because I wanted to know how the mystery ended. If it wasn’t a “who done it” type of book, I would have returned it to the library before I finished it. I give this book 1/5.

A Murder in Time by Julie McElwain

Another book I picked up while wandering around the library, and this one did not disappoint! This book wraps 1800’s period drama with a murder mystery. I thought this book was very good and I would highly recommend it. I’ll give this one 5/5.

Cottage by the Sea by Debbie Macomber

Debbie Macomber’s books are like watching a Hallmark movie. They’re easy to read and always have a happy ending. I’ll rate this one 3/5.

Persuasion by Jane Austen

I love a good Jane Austen novel- they don’t call them classics for nothing! This was an excellent read and I was surprised with myself for not having read it before. This book gets a 5/5 rating.

The Royal Diaries: Victoria, May Blossom of Britannia by Anna Kirwan

The Royal Diaries series are geared toward younger readers (my sister and I used to read these when we were girls). My niece is around the age where she can start reading these and I wanted to read one again to make sure they’re still good. They are! These books combine a fictional diary of a royal girl and end with a historically accurate epilogue of their life. I would highly recommend this book series as gifts for girls around age 10. I would rate this one 5/5.
